OMG I'm sewing!

Wow it's been too long since I've posted! Ok so here is an update. I now have a sewing room!!! I started in my dining room table and took that room over (we were eating dinner at the kitchen bar, lol). I realized that this was something I wanted to keep doing so we decided to take one of the spare bedrooms and turn it into a sewing room :) Here are some pics from the last couple months with things I've been sewing.

I started on pinterest with a simple pencil pouch I found. This tutorial was great because it has step by step instructions with pictures! I love pics!

And then god created YOUTUBE where I found and keep finding how to's on everything and anything sewing. This is the New Yorker purse from 'Love to Sew.' It gave me a step by step tutorial on how to sew this cute little bag from start to finish. Next time I will make the handle a little longer.

Time to take another class. I took this class at my local sewing store. I learned to use twin needles on fabric that's been fused to batting. It gives it this raised and textured look and feeling. I started another one for my sister in orange and lined with striped fabric (I love stripes!)

I found this amazing woman on youtube with great beginner videos on sewing, quilting, even organic gardening, Vanessa, The Crafty Gemini. She has a link on her youtube channel for beginner sewing projects that I have watched over and over and even made a few.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE...makes perfect

I've got to say sewing is definitely much harder than it seems. I started a pattern with Bubby and decided to to a little on my own. Lets just say I accidental sewed the pockets of the dress right side out. Then I sewed them twice around making them too thick to sew onto the dress...lol.

I found a patter online from a blog that I have been following. It's supposed to be a clutch for diapers. A great gift idea for all my prego friends. I did it. It's not as nice looking as the original and I was afraid to put a button on, but I think it came out pretty cool.

Next project...

Sewing for Dummies

I finally picked up my friend's sewing machine, it was still in the box. I had Bubbie come over and teach some basics. I learned to fill a bobbin, thread the machine, and a little about tension.

We started by practicing how to sew in a straight line..and then moved onto cushions. I was hooked! I made three more after that...haha

Tip : Don't forget to remove the pins...Dan almost poked his eye out!! LOL

ROSS...Now open!

Ross, an off-price department store, has been 'coming soon' for way to long. Driving by it would be such a tease. Today it said 'NOW OPEN' Ahhh! I went and found some awesome pieces for the living room... I picked up 3 three things and had to run out because I would have spent everything I made today there :)

1. Beach art $19.99
2. Turtle wall piece $9.99
3. Dress with pockets (of course I had to get a little something for myself) $12.99

I absolutely love dresses with pockets. I don't always want to carry a purse or clutch when going out for a couple drinks or to go out dancing. I can carry an ID, ATM card and, lip balm comfortably.

Places like Ross are awesome because you get unique designer items for affordable everyday prices.
First day at Ross $45.76...My boyfriend said I'm never allowed there again...lol

Attempting to do what they call "Painting"

Celery Sprig is the color I fell in love with. Didn't know what theme I was going for but I knew I wanted Blue to be my secondary color. After hours on Behr.com I decided to go with the professionals and give in to a Bliss Blue that the website kept throwing at me. I LOVE IT! Here's what I learned:

  • Make sure you have enough painters tape! I ran out and edging took way longer that it should have.
  • Tape, Roll, then edge. I taped then edged not realizing that I could have made my edges a couple inches thick rather than 8 inches thick...haha. The roller goes closer to the edge than you think. This would have saved me hours of fun
  • Behr is definitely the way to go. I didn't even need a second coat.

When complete I searched on pinterest for blue and green to see if I could get a couple of ideas on decorating. I LOVE PINTEREST! There I found that the colors I chose were perfect for a Key West theme.

Adventure at a 'shlock' store

$15 bucks each
So my boyfriend's Bubby wanted to help up organize our new but messy garage. She decided to help us out by buying used and inexpensive dressers at the 'shlock' (Yiddish : cheap tacky junk) store AKA second hand, rather than expensive organizers at places like Home Depot. The Dressers were $15 each and are a great way of organizing things like the 'kitchen junk drawer' and extra craft material.

While there I decided to take a look around and found these awesome frames with beach items in them that go great with Key West decor I've decided to go for at $2 each!
